We are seeking an R&D laboratory assistant to carry out routine laboratory work to support the development of in vitro diagnostic assays using the RPA technology and to perform testing on developed chemical reactions. We are looking for someone with a molecular biology or genetics background to work within a small team in our R&D department.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for assigned laboratory tasks and associated documentation. You may have experience working on development activities within an R&D department under supervision or be a new graduate in a biological science discipline who demonstrates enthusiasm, energy and a willingness to learn.

The role will include completion of documentation in accordance with the company’s quality management system, the undertaking of general housekeeping duties associated with all areas of the facility, the performance of routine equipment maintenance and calibration, completion of data analysis, making suggestions and participating in process improvement to ensure continuous improvement in quality and efficiency within R&D activities.

The role is based at our Babraham Research Campus site.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for devising new processes and refining existing processes to optimise protein manufacturing. You will develop and optimise scale-up procedures for fermentation for the production of recombinant proteins from E.coli cultures.

Your day-to-day activities will include planning and implementing feasibility studies, planning process trials, sourcing materials and equipment, reviewing and interpreting analytical test results and data, and writing and implementing new manufacturing procedures. Managing communication with the R&D department, based on another site, alongside continual dialogue with the wider Protein department and manufacturing site will also be part of your daily role.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology or a related subject or extensive experience in the production of recombinant protein from E.coli culture. Experience working with bioreactors, a familiarity with development of In-Vitro Diagnostic products and a knowledge of good manufacturing process is highly desirable.

Duties include the characterisation of RPA reagents and components using a variety of analytical techniques e.g. (U)HPLC, gel electrophoresis, NMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, ICP-OES. They will develop (U)HPLC and LCMS methods for biomolecule characterisation and will run RPA reactions using company devices.

The successful candidate will be able to record, analyse and report data effectively; they will be able to work as part of a small collaborative team. Duties will also include routine equipment maintenance and calibration and general laboratory management duties such as ordering consumables.
